about Pentre FC

We are a junior football club based in Abergele, North Wales. We are affiliated to the North Wales Coast FA and Rhyl & District Junior Football League.

A Brief History of the Club

In May 2008 the first AGM of the club was held with a basic constitution (courtesy of the league secretary) and the first committee was formed. Following that meeting, the club applied to be allowed to compete in the Rhyl & District Junior Football League for the upcoming 2008/09 season.

We started our journey with three teams, hence the three stars on the club badge. These teams were managed by Dean Armstrong, Dewi Marsh-Hughes and Paul Thompson. Before the season started in September 2008, we had added a fourth team managed by Rachael Armstrong.

Initially, we had use of the football pitch in Pentre Mawr Park (along Sea Road) as our home ground and hence the club name reflecting the original home ground. Within the first twelve months we created our current constitution and codes of practice for officials / coaches, parents / guardians and players. A document that has been shared with our permission by the league as a template for new clubs.

The main people involved in developing the club during the early years and taking on virtually all of the committee positions between them were – Dean Armstrong, Rachael Armstrong, Dewi Marsh-Hughes, Zoe Marsh-Hughes, Paul Thompson and Mark Thompson. They were soon joined by club legend and its biggest advocate Treasurer Nigel Warren.

We decided to do more than providing football for children in the area and made it our mission each year at Christmas and at our presentation evenings to take donations in for the local foodbank coining the hashtag #GetYourTinsOut. We have continued to have close links with the Abergele Foodbank team.

By the 2013 / 14 season, we had 7 teams competing in the league and an academy giving fun football coaching to 4 and 5 year olds, the club was going from strength the strength. Then in Ocotober 2015 our world was turned upside down and due to a dispute over match fees with the members of Abergele Rugby Club’s committee we were essentially evicted from playing on our “home” ground in Pentre Mawr Park. 2016 / 17 season saw us take up residency on the Roundabout fields, which remains our home fortress to this day.

We added a club Patron in the form of Welsh Premier League footballer Marc Williams and giving Dewi Marsh-Hughes a lifetime position as club President. More importantly we introduced our new club Chair, who is still steering the club today, Shan Owen. The end of the 2017 / 18 season saw Dean Armstrong and Rachael Armstrong step down and retire from club activites having given a decade of service to the club.

In 2019 we added a new club patron with Pentre FC “old boy” Lloyd Marsh-Hughes who was playing for Chester FC at the time and now plys his trade as a striker in the Welsh Premier League. The club became more than just a junior football club with many people who became involved in any capacity becoming part of the exclusive #PentreFamily which still goes strong today. The club is tagged into visits to stadiums all over europe, or when ex-players take the field for adult teams and especially when the club goes above and beyond as it always has done to support local casues and charities.
